You Are Freaking Brilliant…

February 13, 2017 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

I struggled this week on what I wanted to share with you. I actually had one article written and another in draft mode, but neither were hitting the mark for me instinctually.

This morning I woke with a rush of energy and intense passion. I knew exactly what my message needed to be. Read on if you are ready to be inspired and at the same time feel a little uncomfortable.

We, as women in leadership (by the way, that’s you), need to persist in having our voices heard. You need to speak up for other women who may not for varying reasons (i.e. fear, physical abuse) cannot in their current situation. You need to speak up for your mothers, daughters, sons, grandchildren and next door neighbors.

As recent as this week, a prominent, high profile female leader in our government was silenced… like a lamb. You cannot convince me that our beloved suffragettes who persisted for hours, days, weeks and years to blow the door wide open for our ability to express our opinions and views would accept what’s happening.

Smart Women Take the Leap

November 21, 2008 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

The other day, I was listening to one of Madonna’s great dance tunes, “Jump.”  It’s a fun song that makes me want to jump up and dance around the room.  It also motivates me into thoughts about the “jump” in my own life–to take the leap to the next level.

This got me thinking about how Smart Women take the leap into realizing their Big Ideas, Dreams, and Goals.

We all have passions and dreams inside of us.  There may be times in our life when those passions and dreams can take a “back seat” to other areas in our lives, but they are still there—they never disappear or go away.  They wait patiently for us to acknowledge them and take some sort of action—a leap toward them.  As we begin to fantasize about those unfulfilled passions and dreams, we can sometimes fall into a trap of believing that they may never come true.  Why?  Because these dreams usually require change that’s really “big.”  Change would need to occur in our lives.

Change brings about uncertainty and being “uncomfortable.” Do you think I might be writing from experience?

Many of you know my story.  I founded and ran an international marketing company for 12 years.  It started as a part-time business because I needed to earn extra income.  Over time (and a lot of hard work!), it became an international company that was very successful.  This allowed me the opportunity to travel to wonderful places all over the world to do my work.  When I became a mom, I realized that this was no longer the right path for me.  After much soul-searching, I felt a calling to work with women to help them realize their own passions and dreams.  Was it easy?  No way!  Was it challenging to make such a bold change in my life with two young children?  You bet.

Smart Women Get Uncomfortable

August 21, 2008 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

I’m 48 years old and I have never been on ice skates.  That is, until yesterday.  My 5½-year-old daughter, Jenna, has taken an interest in ice skating and I typically take her to the ice arena here in Park City where we are on vacation. I watch her skate while listening to the most incredible music they are playing on the sound system (CC Revival and the soundtrack from The Big Chill).

Every time we go, Jenna always asks me, “Mom, when are you going to ice skate with me?”  And my answer has been, “Oh, maybe next time.”   Yesterday, Jenna asked her usual question and as I prepared myself to give her the typical answer, she quickly spoke up and said, “Mom, please, please, skate today!”

I finally admitted to Jenna that I had never been on ice skates before.  Jenna’s answer:  “Mom, it’s easy—I’ll teach you!”  And so there was nothing left to do but rent the skates and prepare myself for what I thought would be a dreadful outcome.

My heart was racing as I approached the ice on unsteady skates.  Another woman could sense my apprehension. The absolute look of terror on my face was probably also a clue!  She shared with me that there was another entrance to the ice rink that had “wider rails to hold onto.”  And hold onto the rails, I did! Clutching every step of the way in the beginning!

When you are faced with something new in your life, you have two choices:  Yes, to learning something new and getting out of your comfort zone; or No, I’m going to stay exactly where I am.  Being uncomfortable or unsure of yourself and your abilities is no fun. It holds the possibility of making mistakes that others can see and being unsure of the outcome—two things that we want to avoid at all costs.  Let me ask you a question: What is it costing you?  What is your unwillingness to explore and discover something new costing you along the way?  I can tell you that if I had not rented those skates and joined my daughter on the ice, the cost of not having the experience would have been high—possibly priceless.

Smart Women Paint Their Magic Circle

May 29, 2008 | By Joy Chudacoff 2 Comments

I took my daughter Jenna to her Karate class the other day, and after the instructor welcomed all of the children to the class he asked them to “paint your magic circle around you.” I sat there and watched a group of children take their hands and paint an imaginary circle around their bodies and sit down. This exercise was, of course, the instructors attempt to keep 12 five year-olds from running around the room doing things that weren’t meaningful, so that they could stay focused. This got me to thinking about how women “paint magic circles” around their lives as well.

Thankfully, women have a lot of choices in our society today. This can be both good and bad news. Why? Because we can do it all and we do it all very well. Sometimes I think we paint too many “magic circles.” We have the opportunity to fulfill many roles —wife, partner, mom, career, entrepreneur, daughter, volunteer, caregiver, friend—did I leave anything out? With so many responsibilities demanding our time and attention, we need to paint a magic circle called “magic circle for me.”

Given all that we do, we rarely take the time necessary for ourselves. It’s crucial that you paint a “magic circle” that is just for you, because you need a place where you can sit and reflect. A magic circle where you can sit and think about where you are right now and where you might want to go next. Sometimes we have “magic circles” where the paint is old, chipped and faded. It’s time to let go of that magic circle and create a new one. Remember, it’s magic, it’s imaginary—you can change it if you want to. Here’s the problem with this sometimes.
