Remember Lucy Van Pelt in the comic strip Charlie Brown? I woke this morning thinking about one of her famous lines, “I told you so, you blockhead!” Lucy was known for setting up a psychiatric booth in the neighborhood offering advice to her friends for five cents per person. Clearly she caught the entrepreneurial bug early but I’m not sure I’d want to get my business direction from her. : -) This got me thinking about how women entrepreneurs need to be cautious when seeking advice, coaching and mentoring on their road to success.
When I first had the idea to birth Smart Women Smart Solutions®, something happened that nearly convinced me to hang up my coaching hat before I got started. I was attending a party with my husband and shortly after we arrived, I ran into an old acquaintance. I could hardly contain my excitement about my new business idea. After our initial conversation, I blurted out my new big idea and guess what happened? I’ll never forget it. She had this loud, high-pitched laugh that carried across the room and with a flip of the hand, she said as loudly as she could, “Ha! That will never work! Women will never pay for that. That’s why we have coffee meetings and girls night out!” She turned on her heel and waltzed away leaving me there with my glass of red wine and a broken spirit. : -(
The one question I get asked over and over from women entrepreneurs is, “How do you know what to delegate to an assistant?” I love this question because it tells me you realize that you can’t (and shouldn’t) try to do it all in your business and your ready to get the support you need.
Nearly ten years ago when I founded Smart Women Smart Solutions®, I was involved in every aspect of running my business but as things started to take off and my business gained momentum, I found myself becoming exhausted with all the “to-do’s” (remember I had a one year-old and three year-old at the time). I realized that no matter how efficient I was, I’d never get to the bottom of the list plus my energy was in slow drip mode for my family. It’s nearly impossible to take your business to the next level of success if you’re spending your day buried in all the admin work and details. Time to get some help!
Within the last week, I’ve had the opportunity to see the movie “Divergent” not once but twice due to the fact that the movie (and book) is all the rage with girls and my daughter is no exception. It’s your typical good versus evil plot but the twist is a young woman named “Tris” who’s confident, clever and in the end fights for what she believes in and saves the day.
What does this have to do with women and entrepreneurship? I’m getting there. : -) In the story, each member of the society takes a test and from the results of the test, the member has to choose from five structured and narrowly defined categories to live in for the rest of their lives. In essence, you become labeled for life.
One of the top priorities for women entrepreneurs who desire to grow their business is visibility. This is an area I spend considerable time on with my clients – creating a plan for them to get noticed and seen as an expert in their field or industry. Whether it’s public speaking, attending events or hosting a workshop, getting out of the office is one of the fastest and most profitable ways to accelerate the success of your business. This is where strategic partnerships are created and the referral process begins to happen.
If you want to be taken seriously and give people the impression that you are the “go to gal” in your industry, it’s essential that you show up looking sharp and savvy. When I’m working in my home office, it’s hair pulled back, no makeup and Uggs for me but you wouldn’t find me at an event looking that way! Whether we like it or not, people form opinions about us early on based on how we show up.
Here are five strategies to consider before you step out to meet and greet new business opportunities:
I was feeling a bit out of sorts. My creative self felt like it was moving at a crawl and my decision-making at a snails pace. Something was off but I couldn’t put my finger on it until I started to reflect over the last eight weeks. I had traveled two times in 30 days to the East Coast to see my father who’s ailing and followed that with a week-long business trip. I realized that our home never fully recovered from the holidays. There were “loose ends” in many places which left me feeling unsettled. Even though I have a housekeeper (I highly recommend for all women!) there are some tasks that she can’t do – like clearing clutter from desks and drawers.
Clutter can destroy your creative thinking. When I give clutter permission to enter my home or office, I find it difficult to make good, solid decisions.
I decided to take advantage of my weekend to clear the clutter, get organized and make room for more clarity and creative thought in my life. Result? In just a few hours, I began to feel calmer, more peaceful and I noticed that my decision-making had become razor-sharp.
I was driving down Pacific Coast Highway at 4:30 in the afternoon just a few days before Christmas. My cell phone rang and it was the principal from my daughter’s elementary school. My first thought? “Wow, this must be pretty serious if she’s calling me during school winter break!” I answered the phone (a little nervously I might add).
The principal greeted me happily (whew!) and proceeded to tell me the reason for the call was that I had been nominated to receive a Founders Day award from the school which honors parents for their contribution to the community. Why is this important for you to know? Read on as I have a hunch that what I did next might be similar to your reaction in these situations.

At the end of each year, I take an inventory of my life and business to shine a light on what proved to be most effective for me.
Here are my top nine timely tips for women entrepreneurs who are ready to make a Big Leap in 2014:
1. Exercise Empathy – If you have a dream of making a difference in the world or desire a leadership role, empathy is a valuable tool you’ll need along the way. As the great leader Stephan Covey said, “Seek first to understand.” Understanding and acknowledging someone else’s situation is the foundation to change.
2. Make Decisions – Set a goal to become a quick decision maker. Remember, money likes speed so your ability to make quick decisions will serve you well in business. Do your research but at some point, call time and decide.
