Charlene Simon on She's Got Moxie with Joy Chudacoff

I think that you’re going to absolutely love my guest today, Charlene Simon, who is the Founder & CEO of Bathhouse Soapery & Caldarium.

She’s a serial entrepreneur who started her first business very early on in life. She didn’t finish high school taking the traditional path (she eventually got her GED), and became a wife at 15 and a mother of three by the time she was 20 years old.

It was after a visit to a soap shop that left Charlene feeling mesmerized by the whole process. She spent hours in the library teaching herself the science of making soap so she could fulfill a dream of one day owning her own shop. Today, she has expanded her business to five retail locations across the U.S. and is also getting into cosmetics as well!

In 2019, Charlene was crowned Mrs. Arkansas America and went on to compete in the famous Mrs. America competition in Las Vegas, placing Top 15 in the nation and bringing home the coveted trophy for “Mrs. Fabulous Face.”

Gail Schenbaum – Achieving Massive Growth with the Umergency App in the Last 18 Months

August 28, 2019 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

Gail Schenbaum on She's Got Moxie with Joy ChudacoffThis week, I’m having Gail Schenbaum, Founder & CEO of Umergency, back on the show as one of my encore interviews!

Gail was first on She’s Got Moxie in March 2018 to talk about how she created the Umergency app for college students and their parents’ in emergency situations.

After receiving a middle of the night phone call from her own daughter (who was in an ambulance) while she was across the country attending college, Gail knew that she had to do something to make it easier for parents to get in touch with their kids in emergency situations.

The Umergency app prepares and empowers college students, their parents, and extended families with the real-time tools they need to navigate through any emergency, health or safety situation at the touch of a button.

The content is college-specific, and comes pre-loaded with data for over 1200 colleges, including local emergency services, on-campus resources, trusted contacts, a GPS enabled urgent alert beacon, built-in access to national crisis hotlines, and the ability to upload secure copies of students’ insurance card and signed medical consent form.

Umergency removes confusion and chaos from an urgent situation, before it happens.

You can Subscribe and Listen to the Podcast on Apple Podcasts. And be sure to leave me a Rating and Review!

You still have to go back and trust your gut. But many times, people who know a lot in a certain area bring many ‘aha’ moments to you.” – Gail Schenbaum

Show Notes:

  • How Umergency has achieved massive growth in the last 18 months
  • The staggering statistics about college students and ER visits and what parents really need to know

Rosie O'Neill on She's Got Moxie with Joy Chudacoff

**Rosie O’Neill is the FIRST in a series of ENCORE podcast interviews we will be conducting over the next few months. We’ve been closely watching the growth of some of the women we’ve had on the show before and we’re inviting back guests who are having explosive growth and are willing to share the journey with you.

Rosie O’Neill, is an entrepreneur with a major sweet tooth for business. I had Rosie on ‘She’s Got Moxie’ back on November 15, 2017, and that episode is still today one of our most popular. Since my last interview with Rosie, (about 450 days ago), Sugarfina has grown tremendously. Today, she shares with us what business has been like and how the company has exploded with growth so quickly.

In July 2012, along with her co-founder and fiancé (now hubby) Josh Resnick, Rosie launched Sugarfina, a luxury candy boutique for grown-ups featuring the finest confections from artisan candy makers around the world. Best known for Champagne and Rosé-infused gummy bears, Sugarfina has been named one of the “World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies” and “World’s 10 Most Innovative Retailers” by Fast Company as it disrupts the $200B confections industry. Sugarfina has also made the list of the “World’s Most Beautiful Candy Shops” by Architectural Digest.

Sleep Your Way to The Top

June 27, 2014 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

Sleep Your Way to The TopThere’s one slight shift you can make in your daily habits that could reap BIG rewards. In fact, this habit has been linked to better decision-making, creativity, health and even weight-loss. Do you know what it is? Sleep.

Making a commitment (experts say seven to eight hours is preferable) to sleep can create a dramatic impact in every area of your life. In Arianna Hufffington’s new book, “Thrive“, she shares a study from Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine that lack of sleep impacts mood, ability to focus, creativity and generally affects our mental performance. Mental performance is a top requirement for entrepreneurs!

Ever notice when the topic of sleep comes up, the conversation goes something like this: “I only had four hours of sleep last night – working on a big project.” “I had so much work to do that I just couldn’t get to bed before midnight!” Lack of sleep has become a status symbol. If you get too much, somehow this gets translated into: “She doesn’t have enough to do-she’s not busy enough.” Stop the madness. Move away from this mindset.

Is Your Creativity in Drip Mode?

February 20, 2014 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

02-20-14Article hand on faceI was feeling a bit out of sorts. My creative self felt like it was moving at a crawl and my decision-making at a snails pace. Something was off but I couldn’t put my finger on it until I started to reflect over the last eight weeks. I had traveled two times in 30 days to the East Coast to see my father who’s ailing and followed that with a week-long business trip. I realized that our home never fully recovered from the holidays. There were “loose ends” in many places which left me feeling unsettled. Even though I have a housekeeper (I highly recommend for all women!) there are some tasks that she can’t do – like clearing clutter from desks and drawers.

Clutter can destroy your creative thinking. When I give clutter permission to enter my home or office, I find it difficult to make good, solid decisions.

I decided to take advantage of my weekend to clear the clutter, get organized and make room for more clarity and creative thought in my life. Result? In just a few hours, I began to feel calmer, more peaceful and I noticed that my decision-making had become razor-sharp.

3 Simple Steps to Better Decision Making

September 19, 2013 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

09-19-13Article unhappysmileOne of the biggest challenges I see people struggle with is making decisions. There’s this burning need inside of us to avoid making a mistake when it comes to choosing one over the other. They key is to know when a decision really matters (“should I marry this guy?”) or is it a mere blip on the screen of your life (“What should I have for dinner?”). I, too, have had my share of sleepless nights over the “yes or no” of life, however over the years, I’ve developed a process that I take myself through when it’s time to ground myself in a decision:

1. Batman & Commissioner Gordon – When I was a little girl I loved watching Batman and I marveled at how one call on the red phone with Commissioner Gordon would solve everything- it was magic! When I’m struggling with a decision, I reach out to my mentors and trusted advisors to get their read on the situation. Having a solid, success-oriented group of trusted advisors just a phone call away makes decision making much easier.

Smart Women Get Off The Fence

September 24, 2010 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

While driving along Sunset Blvd. a few days ago, I thought about a conversation I had earlier that morning with a friend about how difficult it is for some people to make a decision. This process can be a challenge and create a lot of anxiety. I’m not sure if people are aware that “sitting on the fence” when it comes to making decisions takes a serious toll on their energy levels and their lives.
