9 Game Changing Tips for 2015

January 9, 2015 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

01-09-15articleBHere are my top nine timely tips for women entrepreneurs who are ready to catapult their business to new heights in 2015:

1. Make Decisions – Set a goal to become a quick decision maker. Remember, money likes speed so your ability to make quick decisions will serve you well in business. Do your research, decide and course-correct along the way.

2. Exercise Empathy – If you have a dream of making a difference in the world or desire a leadership role, empathy is a valuable tool you’ll need along the way. As the great leader Stephan Covey said, “Seek first to understand.” Understanding and acknowledging someone else’s situation is the foundation to change.

Smart Women And The 4 Entrepreneurial Phases

September 12, 2011 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

Entrepreneurial PhasesWhen you start a new business or take action on a big idea that you've had brewing for a while, it can be a very exciting time. You begin to get a taste of what entrepreneurship can feel like; you’re in control of your own schedule, maybe you worked for someone else and you've escaped the rigid 9-5 routine and you've become your own boss – life feels good.

I remember when I started my first business. Initially, my goal was to earn an extra $500 per month so I could afford my own apartment and eliminate the need for a roommate. Over time, my vision for that part-time local business began to grow and ultimately it became an international business that had revenues of just under 2 million.

Smart Women Get It Off The Ground

August 18, 2011 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

While vacationing in Park City this summer, I was enjoying my morning coffee on the deck overlooking the majestic mountains when all of a sudden, several hot air balloons “popped” into my view. The colors of each balloon were bright, vivid, and unique. Some were like rainbows; others were bright red, yellow and gold. They rose to varying heights in the sky, each one navigating their own unique path around the valley. This got me thinking about how Smart Women’s Big Ideas, Dreams and Goals are a lot like hot air balloons.

Smart Women and The Academy Awards

February 26, 2009 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

Like millions of people all over the world, my family watched the Academy Awards on Sunday night. 02-26-09redcarpetPeople watch “the Oscars” for different reasons. Some people watch because they enjoy the fashion show and like to see the costume choices. Some people watch because they can’t wait to see who won which category. I watch for one reason: I like to listen to the acceptance speeches. You learn a lot about people by listening to what they say in their acceptance speech. This is a moment that may or may not ever come again and it is one of the most watched events of the year, so you have a big audience in which to share your message.

Although I don’t often go to the movies, I was fortunate enough to see the movie that won best picture, “Slum Dog Millionaire.” As I listened to the acceptance speech for this amazing film, there were some really valuable “golden nuggets” that were shared that reminded me of my work with Smart Women who are ready to re-invent themselves and take their lives to the next level:

During the acceptance speech, the director used a few key words to describe their journey to realizing their dream of making this important film:

Smart Women Ignite Their Fire

February 2, 2009 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

01-29-09candle1As I was getting ready for a day of skiing on a recent family ski trip, I had one goal in mind: Stay warm! I knew it was going to be cold and windy that day, and I wanted to make sure that I kept my body heat inside. This got me thinking about how Smart Women who are living a life filled with passion and purpose do just the opposite: They give themselves permission to release their “fire” of desire and passion out into the world.

As women, we can spend years–if not decades–keeping our “fire” of desire and passion inside of us. We hold our Big Ideas, dreams, and goals at our core because we are nurturers by nature and put others' needs ahead of ourselves. We give care and support to family, friends, colleagues, and community. The great misfortune is that if we're not careful, our fire can get blown out or extinguished. Unsupported, we begin to have conversations with our committee of one about how our Big Idea or Dream “would never work, it's not possible, what was I thinking?” Even worse, if we can become courageous enough to share an idea with someone, we often find a negative judgment or criticism about the “fire” of desire and passion we hold so close in our heart, soul, and core of our being.

Smart Women Have Dreams Too!

January 22, 2009 | By Joy Chudacoff 1 Comment

My son Jack came home from school today with an excited, “Yippee Mom, there's no school next Monday because it's Martin Luther King Day!” A few minutes later he comes running back into the kitchen and asks, “Mom, who is Martin Luther King anyway?” Wow—what a question. How do I answer that one and still have time to get dinner on the table?

So here goes. Martin Luther King was a man who lived in courage and vision every day of his life. He was a man who most likely lived in fear and faced challenges for pursing his dreams and convictions. In August of 1963, he gave a speech entitled, “I Have A Dream”, which changed the way this country saw equality and fairness forever.

What, you might ask, does this have to do with Smart Women? Well, a lot actually. Many times women live other people's dreams. Not because we don't have any of our own. You all know that I believe we are the most creative beings on earth with Big Ideas. Many times we don't even realize that we are not connected to our dreams and desires. Women are so busy helping others to realize their dreams, (family, friends, co-workers) that we don't take the time to ask ourselves the question, “What am I dreaming about?” “What's my vision for my future?” And… “Do I have the courage to act on this dream and vision?”

Smart Women Are On the Slopes!

January 15, 2009 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

01-15-09skiingRecently, while on a family vacation in Park City, Utah, I was helping my 8-year-old son, Jack, get ready for a day of skiing.  It was sunny, 35 degrees and gorgeous outside.  I handed my son his face mask and he looked at me puzzled and said, “Mom, there is no way I'm going to need this today–have you looked outside?”

I  replied, “Yes, I have and you always need to be prepared for a quick change in the weather when you are on the mountain.”  As I prepared myself to leave for skiing that morning, I began to reflect on how being prepared for snow skiing is a lot like preparation for success as a woman entrepreneur.

When you desire a successful day of skiing, there needs to be some planning before you get on the chair lift.  You need to stop and think about all of the things that you will need in order to have a great day.  (This is why ski wear has about 19 pockets located inside and outside the clothing!)  If you are a woman who skis, then you know that the weather can change at any given moment so you need to pack accordingly.  If you choose to go skiing without thoughtful preparation, you may be in for a challenging day.

If you are a woman with a Big Idea, Dream or Goal, realizing your big vision can be similar to a woman getting prepared for success in a day of skiing.

As I rode up the chair lift that morning, I thought of 4 solutions to help you have a great day of skiing and realize your Big Idea, Dreams, and Goals as a woman entrepreneur:

Smart Women Believe

December 4, 2008 | By Joy Chudacoff Leave a Comment

Last night, our family went to The Grove here in Los Angeles. The Grove is a large retail shopping center that really goes above and beyond decorating for the holidays. They have a beautifully decorated tree larger than the one at Rockefeller Center in New York. They “create” falling snow every evening. For children who live in So. California, this is a delight!

As we strolled through the crowd, I noticed a very long line of children waiting outside a rather large gingerbread house. As my children and I peeked through the windows, we could see old St. Nick sitting inside with a child on his lap. You could see the look of excitement and intent on each child's face. These children believe that they will meet Santa. They believe that he has come from the North Pole just for them and he will hear each one of their wish lists and make their dreams come true. I sure do remember what that felt like when I was a little girl.

This got me thinking about how Smart Women need to believe in their dreams with a lot of excitement and intention in order to make them happen.
