FACT: 95% of venture capital is granted to companies where senior leadership does not include any women.
My guest today, Edith Dorsen, along with her partner, got mad and then they got busy taking action to change this statistic.
On today’s show, Edith talks about how she started this business, tips for the best pitch, the most challenging moment in her career so far, and more.
The singular most important thing to execute on a good idea is having a core team around you because no successful company is built on the back of a single individual.” – Edith Dorsen
When you build companies that include a diverse senior leadership, you’re building stronger companies that perform better.” – Edith Dorsen
The decisions need to be weighed properly and probably made more slowly before you make a commitment that takes a long time to unwind if it’s not the right one.” – Edith Dorsen

There’s one slight shift you can make in your daily habits that could reap BIG rewards. In fact, this habit has been linked to better decision-making, creativity, health and even weight-loss. Do you know what it is? Sleep.
Making a commitment (experts say seven to eight hours is preferable) to sleep can create a dramatic impact in every area of your life. In Arianna Hufffington’s new book, “Thrive“, she shares a study from Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine that lack of sleep impacts mood, ability to focus, creativity and generally affects our mental performance. Mental performance is a top requirement for entrepreneurs!
Ever notice when the topic of sleep comes up, the conversation goes something like this: “I only had four hours of sleep last night – working on a big project.” “I had so much work to do that I just couldn’t get to bed before midnight!” Lack of sleep has become a status symbol. If you get too much, somehow this gets translated into: “She doesn’t have enough to do-she’s not busy enough.” Stop the madness. Move away from this mindset.

A few days ago, I contacted a friend to ask for a referral recommendation for a big project I’m working on. My referral source responded quickly providing me with the information I needed. I was so excited to speak with this potential resource. I immediately and eagerly reached out by email. No reply. Within 48 hours, I made a second attempt via email and phone. No reply.
Can you imagine how I felt?
I have great respect for the person who made the referral. In fact, it was most likely a “done deal” because of the person who made the referral, however the lack of response left me feeling unsure. I began to question the professionalism and expertise of the person I was trying to reach.
Why do I share this with you?

Like millions of people all over the world, my family watched the Academy Awards on Sunday night. People watch “the Oscars” for different reasons. Some people watch because they enjoy the fashion show and like to see the costume choices. Some people watch because they can’t wait to see who won which category. I watch for one reason: I like to listen to the acceptance speeches. You learn a lot about people by listening to what they say in their acceptance speech. This is a moment that may or may not ever come again and it is one of the most watched events of the year, so you have a big audience in which to share your message.
Although I don’t often go to the movies, I was fortunate enough to see the movie that won best picture, “Slum Dog Millionaire.” As I listened to the acceptance speech for this amazing film, there were some really valuable “golden nuggets” that were shared that reminded me of my work with Smart Women who are ready to re-invent themselves and take their lives to the next level:
During the acceptance speech, the director used a few key words to describe their journey to realizing their dream of making this important film:
