My favorite quote by Einstein is “Vision without execution is merely hallucination.” The first time I read this I was surprised at the glaring truth to this simple statement. At the same time, I realized it’s sometimes easier said than done.

Goal setting, New Year’s resolutions, dreams, and big ideas-these are heavy on people’s minds right now as we cross the threshold into 2012. Everyone wants to make up for lost time and start off the year on a course to reach their biggest goals and why not? It’s a leap year which makes it even more exciting to think about soaring to new heights. I’m right there with you. I, too, have big ideas, dreams and goals.

Einstein’s quote helped me to realize there are two distinct parts to reaching your big ideas, dreams and goals. First you must have a Vision and second, you must have a Plan to accomplish the vision. One does not happen without the other. They are like partners working in tandem. Visionaries can be challenged by creating a plan and Planners sometimes lack the necessary vision to keep the dream alive.

Vision is the dream of your desired future. It’s a picture of something you hope for, something you can see clearly in your imaginative mind. A vision is a dream that inspires and motivates you.

Planning is logical, factual and realistic. A plan is a set of specific objectives and tasks broken down into achievable bite-size goals that you can reach in a targeted amount of time.

Without a passionate dream, a plan becomes idle busyness. Without a realistic plan, your vision becomes more like daydreaming.

Below are some tips and solutions that will help you during both the visioning and planning phases for your Big Ideas, Dreams and Goals for 2012:

VISION

1. Steal Some Solitude – Having some quiet alone time to focus on your vision is vital to the outcome. Block out a few hours, a day or even a weekend to get clear on what your dream looks like and what it feels like when it becomes a reality.

2. Clarity is Key – Becoming crystal clear is a must. Visioning about the who, what, where of your dream will help you later in the planning phase.

3. Use Tools to Make it BIG – Buy some large white post-it paper at your local supply store and colorful, vibrant markers to write or draw. I always say to women I work with: “How big can a dream become on an 8×11 piece of paper?”

4. Create a Vision Board – Once you are clear about what your dream is, a vision board is a productive way to keep the dream alive every day. I use this in my “Creating The Spark” Success Circles and women share that this one tool has helped them stay on course and reach their goals. Have it laminated and place it somewhere you’ll be reminded often or make it your wallpaper on your electronic devices.

PLANNING

1. Set Specific Goals – Here’s an example of a general goal: “I want to have more clients and make more money.” Here’s a specific goal: “I want to increase my income by 25% and work with 10 additional people who are my preferred ideal client by April 1.” Notice the difference? The first goal is general while the second holds a specific outcome and date. You are more likely to reach your goal if you are specific. It helps you to measure your progress along the way and reward yourself when you cross a milestone.

2. Make a commitment – Create time in your calendar to work on your goals. In the example above, it will be necessary for you to decide what marketing strategies will shorten your time frame to accomplish the goals and then schedule those into your calendar daily, weekly, monthly.

3. Know your areas of weakness – Everyone has areas of strength and weakness. Operate in your strengths and get support in the areas where you are weak. For example, I do not enjoy the technical aspect in my business or bookkeeping (two essential pieces to any successful business) so I have people on my team who are experts in this area and love doing these tasks. This is where having a coach could be helpful in helping you to identify your strengths and find creative support in the areas where you need help.

4. Evaluate and Course-Correct – Along the way, you may need to course-correct your original plan because of new learning or changes that occur along the way. Being an entrepreneur means you are open to new possibilities and ready for change when necessary.

Anything is possible. Everything is waiting for you.

When you start a new business or take action on a big idea that you’ve had brewing for a while, it can be a very exciting time. You begin to get a taste of what entrepreneurship can feel like; you’re in control of your own schedule, maybe you worked for someone else and you’ve escaped the rigid 9-5 routine and you’ve become your own boss – life feels good.

I remember when I started my first business. Initially, my goal was to earn an extra $500 per month so I could afford my own apartment and eliminate the need for a roommate.

Over time, my vision for that part-time local business began to grow and ultimately it became an international business that had revenues of just under 2 million.

Along my entrepreneurial journey and working with 1000′s of women, I’ve discovered that there are 4 phases to entrepreneurship and each phase plays a key role in your success. Each phase requires a different skill or way of thinking and one is not more important than the other. You may find that you are a “natural” in one or more of the phases and possibly “challenged” in other phases. If so, you will want to think about getting support in the areas where you’re less comfortable.

The Big Ideas Phase
The beginning. You dream about the future, about your preferred life and how your Big Idea can help you live that preferred life. You have visions of working in your dream business doing something you enjoy. During this phase, your vision of the business is “general” or in the broad sense. Example: Maybe you’re dreaming of becoming a yoga instructor. You have a vision of owning a yoga studio where you have the opportunity to teach yoga to people who want to be strong and healthy. (You get to do something you love, get paid for doing it and keep a strong healthy body too!) You daydream about the idea, however, you haven’t actually created a plan to make it happen yet. Maybe it’s still a “secret” to everyone except a close friend or family member.

The Illumination Phase
I refer to this as “shining a light” on the Big Idea. This is the phase where you become more “specific” about the dream. The idea actually begins to take shape. Using the yoga studio/instructor example, you may be asking yourself questions like: What age group will attend my classes? Where will I teach? Do I want my own studio? What time of day and how often? The Illumination Phase is a time to begin writing these questions (and the answers) down in a journal that is kept solely for the business. The Big Idea is beginning to take shape now. This is the beginning of your business plan.

Process and Plan Phase
This is the “doing” phase. You bring your Big Idea to reality. Maybe you need to become certified as a Yoga instructor. You begin to explore the certification process. If you desire your own studio, you’ll want to look for space that will be an ideal location. You are now beginning the process of setting the business up, claiming a name, and marketing yourself to attract clients.

The Leader Phase
The Leader Phase in any business is when you become known as an expert in your industry. You begin speaking and educating people about your mission and your vision. In the yoga instructor example, you would educate your community about your vision for yoga and how your dream is to help people feel better, healthier and stronger. You become a storyteller and educator in the yoga community. Your vision starts to expand and you imagine your studio in different cities or parts of the world. You become known as an expert in your field and gain recognition. You become an inspiration to others.

Women are the most creative beings on earth. You have Big Ideas that have the ability to be award winning businesses. It’s essential that each phase be nurtured along the way to ensure your success.

You may want to go from the Big Idea Phase directly to the Leader Phase without actually putting a plan or system in place to handle your clients once they become attracted to your business. On the other hand, you may be spending so much time on the Illumination Phase that you can’t seem to “pull the trigger” and get out there in a big way to promote yourself and your Big Idea.

All four phases are necessary if you want to create ultimate success.

When I began my journey as a woman entrepreneur years ago, I realized I needed support in several of the phases. I needed the support of coaches and mentors in the Illumination Phase to help me take my Big Idea from “general” to more “specific.” I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my team which is paramount to the Process and Plan Phase.

I invite you to take some time and think about which entrepreneurial phase you’re in right now. Discover where you are a “natural” and consider getting some support in the areas where you need help so you can enjoy the ultimate success you want and deserve.

Anything is possible. Everything is waiting for you.

If you are a woman entrepreneur, your goal is to create brand awareness with your ideal client. American Girl® does this beautifully. Here are a few tips to help you boost your brand awareness for your business.

A few weeks ago, I took a vacation with my family to New York City. While there, we visited the American Girl® store. My daughter Jenna loves this store, and it’s easy to understand why so many girls are attracted to this brand. When you enter the store, the “experience” begins. This got me thinking about how Smart Women could learn from American Girl® how to build a business image or brand that lasts.

If you are a woman entrepreneur, your goal is to create brand awareness with your ideal client. It’s essential that you develop a marketing “mantra” that communicates to people on a continual basis what benefits you offer your clients and how they will be transformed or better off after they work with you.

American Girl® does this beautifully. They have a unique product. It’s not just any doll. You have over 20 choices of dolls to choose from, and you can customize the doll’s look and personality. For example, you can create a doll that loves sports (Jenna’s favorite), nature, or one from a specific historical time period. The entire store is set up so you can experience all of the dolls in different settings and choose exactly which one is perfect for you.

Here are a few tips you can use to boost your brand awareness for your business. These are effective whether you are just getting started or have been in business for a few years.

1. Create a logo – What is it that you do for your clients? Choose colors and a logo that represent your business. For example, my marketing has a lavender and ivory color scheme, and my logo is the nautilus shell because it’s my belief the nautilus shell is a near-perfect representation of a woman’s life. The American Girl® has the famous star graphic, as they want every girl to know she’s a star no matter who she is or what her preferences are.

2. Create an “experience” – Think about the process you use with your clients. Is it enjoyable and relaxing? For example, if you are an attorney, think about what you can do to make their visit memorable. Maybe it’s serving their beverage in a beautiful glass with a colorful, thick napkin (maybe with your logo on it?). From the first phone call or meeting, you need to develop your stand-out style in order to create a lasting memory with people.

3. Give them what they want – Make sure the services you offer are what the client wants and not what you want to serve them. When I first started my Women’s Success Circles over five years ago, I offered an all-day, one-time-per-month Success Circle. I had women who enrolled in the all-day Circle; however, most women could not devote an entire day to this process. Guess what? I was offering what I wanted them to have—not what they wanted. Once I created a half-day program, women flocked to the Circles. I had to make a change to what they wanted and give them the benefits and transformation they were looking for.

Now some of you may be reading this and thinking, “I’m just getting started, Joy. I’m a solo entrepreneur and not even close to being American Girl®.” Pleasant Rowland, the founder of American Girl®, was a teacher, writer and publisher of children’s books. She created the American Girl® idea out of her love and interest in history. She had no formal business training, and yet her Big Idea is known to millions of people. When you find a process or system that’s working, I invite you to notice how you can learn from it and use it to enhance your Big Idea, Dreams and Goals.

Anything is possible. Everything is waiting for you.

Yesterday, as I was on my way to pick up my kids from school, it occurred to me that I was feeling exhausted—I mean really tired. As I made a mental scan of my day, I realized that I had been in a “reactive” mode most of the day rather than a “proactive” mode. We do need to react to situations that occur in our lives as best we can at that moment, however, Smart Women know that living a “proactive” life where you plan, prepare, and practice conscious living is clearly more rewarding.

Living a “reactive” life can be exhausting and frustrating. There are a lot of quick stops and fast starts–most of them unplanned. The best way for me to describe my day was it felt like I was in a ship without a rudder. No direction, just floating out in a big sea of confusion. No real direction, just reacting to each wave. There was no planned course or clear navigation. I was just trying to keep this rudderless boat afloat and get back to shore.

In contrast, when you are living a “proactive” life, your days are on course with clear navigation, doing things that will lead you to your Big Ideas, Dreams, and Goals. Being “proactive” about your life is being conscious and thoughtful about how you spend your days. You are queen of your ship, with a well thought out map on where you’re going, what you’re going to do, and with whom you will do it.

As I reflected on yesterday, I felt a calling to share it with you. Many women are living a “reactive” life day after day, without a clear plan of action to take them where they want to go. Most of my days are quite “proactive”, with a plan in place to keep moving me toward my goals. As I reflect on my day yesterday, if I was living in this “reactive” mode most of the time, I would be a very unhappy, restless, tired and exhausted woman! How can you get more “proactive” and get out of “reactive” mode? Here are a few tips and solutions:

1. Change “Yes” to “No” – Women are nurturers by nature. We like to be helpful and supportive. It’s a challenge for us to say “No.” The next time someone asks you to do something, I invite you to pause for a moment and ask yourself if this request is one that calls you to action. If someone’s in a real bind, that’s one thing. But if it’s to take on a role that really doesn’t serve you or there may be someone else better suited for the role, maybe you should consider a “No” response. In my Women’s Success Circles, I share with women that there are actually four answers to a Yes or No question!

2. Plan for Downtime – When you see that you have a busy day, plan for some breaks in-between meetings or events. Even 10 minutes can recharge your battery before moving on to the next big task. Make sure you take time to eat lunch in the middle of the day, take a few moments to breathe, get re-focused, and refreshed for the afternoon.

3. Get some support – Find ways to automate, delegate, or delete more of the “to do” items on your list. This is essential for women who are committed to living a life that is passionate and on-purpose with meaning. You can do it all, but you can’t do it all by yourself. It was a tough lesson for me to learn but one that I clearly embrace in my life today. I just brought another person onto my team, as there is no way that I could achieve my “Proactive” life without more help from others.

What I just shared with you is what I left out of my life yesterday. Making too many commitments to others, not giving myself enough downtime in between appointments, and not taking full advantage of the support I have in my life. The above solutions are simple to put into place and they will help you to navigate a clear, well thought out plan for your day and your life. Will there be unavoidable storms on the horizon? You bet. But as I share with the women in my Success Circles; if you can navigate a “proactive” life 85% of the time, you will be sailing into the high seas with plenty of blue sky filled with energy, passion, purpose, and meaning.

Everyone in our family has something fun they enjoy doing here. Jenna is loving her skateboard camp. Her teacher is a “yo-dude” that moves at the pace of molasses when he’s not on his skateboard. But when he gets on that skateboard, you better get up and get outta the way! He moves like lightning on the “board!”

Yesterday, I met with smart woman, Patti Kerr here in Park City. Patti and I have been working together for awhile by phone (she lives on the East Coast) and she decided to come out West and meet with me to keep moving her Big Ideas forward. Patti is currently working on developing her business and writing a book, “I Love You, Who Are You? Loving and Caring for a Parent with Alzheimers.” She is taking action on the work that she loves and feels passionate about.

Hey Smart Women—how are you? I’ve had a busy few weeks with lots of connection to family and friends. We celebrated my father-in-law’s 82nd birthday this past weekend… I played tennis with him, and I have to say, he’s in great shape. His secret to staying healthy? “Everything in moderation.”

The kids are having fun catching up with friends and going to a few camps. This week they’re at UCLA Baseball camp. You walk into the Jackie Robinson stadium and feel overwhelmed by the size and magic of it all. The kids are really enjoying being in that space playing a sport they love. Secretly, I wish I were there myself!

Last night, I had a “date night” with my 8-year-old son, Jack. When we got in the car to leave the house, he looked at me and said, “Mom, I can tell this is going to be a great night!” We went to a restaurant in Santa Monica that has wall-to-wall flat screen TV’s where you can watch just about any sport that holds your interest. Of course, we watched the Dodgers play against the Cincinnati Reds. Hamburger for Jack, salad for me. As we left the restaurant, he even held my hand, which rarely happens anymore since he’s a “big boy” now. This is what it’s all about…

I’ve got some exciting news to share with you: A few weeks ago, I was selected from more than 100 people to become a Platinum Mastermind Leader for Ali International, LLC. Ali International has qualified to be considered for the Inc. 500 list as one of the fastest growing companies in 2009. Ali Brown, www.AliBrown.com, has created a multi-million dollar enterprise and has been one of my coaches over the last few years. I’m honored to be chosen as a Mastermind Leader for her company.

I’m working on some very exciting ideas for you, Smart Women. I’ll have many more details very soon, so stay tuned! You can be sure that everything I’m planning will stay true to my core vision and purpose: To support women in achieving their Big Ideas, Goals, and Dreams.

The other day, I was listening to one of Madonna’s great dance tunes, “Jump.” It’s a fun song that makes me want to jump up and dance around the room. It also motivates me into thoughts about the “jump” in my own life–to take the leap to the next level.

This got me thinking about how Smart Women take the leap into realizing their Big Ideas, Dreams, and Goals.

We all have passions and dreams inside of us. There may be times in our life when those passions and dreams can take a “back seat” to other areas in our lives, but they are still there—they never disappear or go away. They wait patiently for us to acknowledge them and take some sort of action—a leap toward them. As we begin to fantasize about those unfulfilled passions and dreams, we can sometimes fall into a trap of believing that they may never come true. Why? Because these dreams usually require change that’s really “big.” Change would need to occur in our lives.

Change brings about uncertainty and being “uncomfortable.” Do you think I might be writing from experience?

Many of you know my story. I founded and ran an international marketing company for 12 years. It started as a part-time business because I needed to earn extra income. Over time (and a lot of hard work!), it became an international company that was very successful. This allowed me the opportunity to travel to wonderful places all over the world to do my work. When I became a mom, I realized that this was no longer the right path for me. After much soul-searching, I felt a calling to work with women to help them realize their own passions and dreams. Was it easy? No way! Was it challenging to make such a bold change in my life with two young children? You bet.

Every time I have taken the leap to my next Big Idea, Dream or Goal, it has never been easy. One of my mentors said, “Change does not always mean success, but success always means change.” If I think about each “leap” that I have taken, change was always present once I made the decision to do something new or different. I became a little uncomfortable each time and then after awhile, the “uncomfortable” became comfortable. It became my new way of being in the world. I did not always like being “uncomfortable” or taking the leap initially, but I knew if I didn’t take the leap, it meant staying exactly where I was and that was not an acceptable place for me.

How about you? Are you thinking that you need to make a change in some area of you life? Do you want to do something different? Are you ready to take the leap? I know that I am at the edge of something and I’m getting ready to take the leap into new areas of my life. For me, it’s about believing in myself and having faith in my decision. It’s about connecting with my passion and then making a solid plan to support it.

I invite you to think about what you want to take a leap towards. Sit down in a quiet place with some paper and colorful pens and begin to write down what it looks like. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of giving yourself permission to look at your life in a different way. You will need a good support system when you take the leap. Who will that be? Can you visualize those people? What resources or new information will you need to make it happen? You are 41 days away from 2009. Now is the ideal time for you to begin thinking about what you want to leap into in the New Year.

Sometimes the only feasible method of transportation is to take the leap.

Anything is possible. Everything is waiting for you.

In my Success Circles, women create vision boards which represent their big ideas, dreams and plans for living a life filled with energy, passion and purpose. I invite them to bring in favorite photos or magazines they enjoy reading, as possibilities for their board. This week, Dawn, a Circle member (and smart woman) brought in “The Big Book of Action Stickers.” It was a big colorful book filled with stickers for just about everything you can imagine from animals to people. As I flipped through the pages, it got me thinking about how simple it is to become who you want to be in the world.

Have you ever watched a child take an action sticker and place it somewhere on their body? They instantly become their version of who that sticker represents to them. When my daughter puts on a “Batman” sticker, you better believe that she is Batman. Same thing with Spider-Man (for those of you who know Jenna – she is not going to put on a Cinderella sticker!) Children have this incredible imagination that they can become anything they choose. My son Jack, will tell you with great confidence that he is going to be both a professional baseball and basketball player. You may be reading this and thinking, “Oh well, children have such a big imagination.” Yes, they certainly do.

How about you? Do you have a big imagination? Is there something that you would like to create in your life but you just can’t seem to get your arms around it? Do you need an Action Sticker with your Action Figure on it to create that excitement within you to do something bold and daring? Are you living your life each day authentically? Becoming who you really want to be in this life—accomplishing any sort of goal really is just a decision. It’s developing the mindset to make it happen. When I was a little girl, I remember going on big adventures all over the world. I imagined that I was leading a group of people to these beautiful places where they would make new discoveries. (By the way, I was living in Charleston, West Virginia and riding a Schwinn Purple Fair Lady with a silver metallic banana seat, sporting a white wicker basket!). In my work with women, I support them in their journey to their next big idea, dreams and goals. I’m there to assist them with their new discoveries about their own lives.

It’s actually pretty easy to live your life filled with energy, passion and purpose. If you think you can, you will. If you think you can’t, you won’t. Again, it’s about a mindset. It’s essential to live your life according to your plan, making room for the people who matter most to you along the way. I invite you to start looking through your own “Big Book of Action Stickers.” Find the Action Figure that’s right for you. Place it right over your heart, where you can feel it with every breath you take. Who knows? It just might stick.

Anything is possible. Everything is waiting for you.

Last Friday, my children and I went to an Eco-Fest at my son’s school. It offered creative ways to think about living organically and sustaining our planet. At one point my 5 year old daughter Jenna wandered to a booth a few feet away from me, and I noticed that she became very focused on what they were doing. Minutes later, she appeared with something wrapped inside recycled paper that she was carrying very carefully. “Look Mom, I’ve made a pumpkin plant. All we have to do is plant it when we get home and it will grow a pumpkin.” Jenna carried that recycled paper containing dirt and pumpkin seeds with such care for the rest of the afternoon. She was so proud and excited about what she had created, as well as the future when the seeds grow into an actual pumpkin.

This got me thinking about women in the world who are carrying their big ideas, dreams, and goals with them — have you planted them so they will grow, or do you continue to carry them around—possibly in recycled paper, or maybe in your mind?

There are ideas and dreams that we all get excited about, but we never plant the seed or grow the idea. Why? What happens? Life happens. We get busy doing our “to do” list in life. Some of the “to do” list is vital and important and some of it is just plain filler that keeps us from living a life full of energy, passion, and purpose where we are realizing our big ideas and dreams.

How do I know this? My daughter Jenna carefully carried her seeds wrapped loosely in paper all afternoon through the event and then home. She put it on the kitchen counter and asked me, “Mom, when will we plant the pumpkin seeds so I can grow a pumpkin?” Do you notice how she said that? She was already realizing her idea before it had occurred. Not only will she plant the seed but it will grow!

This is what happens to you when you have enthusiasm for something. Guess what? I procrastinated on Friday evening as we had plans as a family. Then on Saturday, we had sporting events for both Jack and Jenna. So here we were on Sunday morning and the pumpkin seeds sat wrapped in their recycled paper on the kitchen counter. What do you think my daughter asked me before she had fully opened her eyes Sunday morning? Yep. You got it.

We all have our reasons why we never get around to realizing what’s most important to us. A wise mentor once shared a simple question that could always get me back on track. “Are you committed to your goals or your excuses?” Well said.

How about you? Are you carrying a big idea, dream, or goal around in recycled paper? Is it stored somewhere in your mind? Have you packed it away so well that you don’t even know where it is? Is there something that you were once so focused and excited about that somehow slipped away or sat on the kitchen counter? There is something. There always is. I invite you to take some time and think about what it is. Connect with your biggest vision of what that idea, dream, or goal might be. And then take action on it. Make it happen.

Jenna and I did plant her pumpkin seed yesterday. Then she stood firmly in front of it and began singing (someone told her plants like songs). She is confident that her seed will grow into a big pumpkin.

Anything is possible. Everything is waiting for you.
